If you haven’t checked out Vinnie Sperrazza’s Substack | highly recommend it, not only is he a great drummer but his knowledge and writing on the subject of drumming, jazz and beyond is an important and needed voice in the world. As I thought about the passing of the incomparable Roy Haynes, I’m glad there are people like Vinnie to put Roy’s life and contributions in the proper perspective. Here are some of his words. Please read the whole post on Mr. Sperrazza’s Substack. “This photo, from a late Seventies ad for Ludwig, was the first thing I thought of when I heard the news: Roy Haynes the indomitable, fearless, and generously stylish. Roy Haynes, our greatest living jazz drummer, died on Tuesday, November 12th, 2024, at age 99. Coming close on the heels of the death of Lou Donaldson, Quincy Jones, and Benny Golson, we are witnessing an age coming to a close. Verses @ Work is a dynamic live hip hop theater piece by MOMENT NYC collaborator and champion, Malik Work. This autobiographical story is an immersive dive into a slice of New York City music history. Set in the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the early 2000s, Work seamlessly intertwines video, live music, musical theater, hip hop, poetry, and conventional monologue. Through laughter and tears, Verses @ Work inspires and transforms. This captivating and charismatic show, features original music by a variety of New York’s finest jazz, dance, groove, and hip hop music producers, with the musical direction of composer, singer/rapper, sound designer Quincy Valentine, and the support of live beats by the incomparable drummer and beat technician, Swiss Chris.

Malik has worked with MOMENT NYC since our first pilot program as a teaching artist, MC, and supporter. His commanding stage presence as an actor is undeniable and this true story, in which he bares his soul, is not to be missed.

Posting this again so the text is full visible. Been meaning to post this for a while. It’s an excerpt from a book started in 1927 and talking about events the author witnessed. It’s an amazing reminder of just how much music, and all history, has happened that is little known to most, and puts all our present sense of ‘advancements’ in question. I’ve also added the liner notes to Ornette Coleman’s “Dancing in Your Head” which pairs nicely with this. That record was my dad’s and I fondly remember as a teenager putting his massive speakers in front of our house and blasting this record with me and my friends. I’ve included an image of said speakers which I now have in my house. Which is a little absurd as they have 18” woofers, but they fill the room with a pleasant sound, warm, beautiful, and meaningful — full of the history of all that have passed through them. My father had these speakers built by a Rastafarian he befriended when working at the Jamaica Arts Center in Queens, specifically so he could fully appreciate Bob Marley’s music (originally driven by a great Marantz receiver unfortunately now gone). RIP Papa, Ornette, and all those that came before us that have lifted our spirits with music. The book I bought on the sidewalk of St Marks between 1st and A sometime in the early 1990s. Every new technology is erasing huge portions of important information. Not all of it’s good or relevant anymore but surely plenty is.

The evening showcases the talent and personalities featured in the book “We Started a Nightclub”: The Birth of the Pyramid Cocktail Lounge as Told by Those Who Lived It, published by Damiani in association with Some Serious Business. The jam-packed evening includes performances, readings, bar dancing, and other happenings by Pyramid alumni and friends. Program begins at 6:30 PM with DJs Matt Shipp and Phil Painson.
Books, special limited-edition t-shirts, and Not the Same Old Shit (#ntsos) necklaces will be for sale at the event.
From publisher Damiani: “What Studio 54 was for disco, the Pyramid Cocktail Lounge was for the alternative scene of 1980s downtown New York. Located at 101 Avenue A, the Pyramid offered a mixture of cultures: from groundbreaking, irreverent theater and experimental music to “anti-drag” that challenged the norms of gender binaries…
"We Started A Nightclub" is an inside look at the cultural history of the East Village in the early 1980s. The project, which began in 2006, is an in-depth exploration of the Pyramid’s origins. An oral history comprising more than 75 interviews, it covers the early years of the Pyramid from the time of its founding through its rise, near demise and rebirth. The book includes previously unpublished photos, flyers and other ephemera, as well as excerpts from more than 50 press releases written between 1983 and 1986.”
