MOMENT NYC is proud to partner with Some Serious Business for this event!
The evening showcases the talent and personalities featured in the book “We Started a Nightclub”: The Birth of the Pyramid Cocktail Lounge as Told by Those Who Lived It, published by Damiani in association with Some Serious Business. The jam-packed evening includes performances, readings, bar dancing, and other happenings by Pyramid alumni and friends. Program begins at 6:30 PM with DJs Matt Shipp and Phil Painson.
Books, special limited-edition t-shirts, and Not the Same Old Shit (#ntsos) necklaces will be for sale at the event.
From publisher Damiani: “What Studio 54 was for disco, the Pyramid Cocktail Lounge was for the alternative scene of 1980s downtown New York. Located at 101 Avenue A, the Pyramid offered a mixture of cultures: from groundbreaking, irreverent theater and experimental music to “anti-drag” that challenged the norms of gender binaries…
"We Started A Nightclub" is an inside look at the cultural history of the East Village in the early 1980s. The project, which began in 2006, is an in-depth exploration of the Pyramid’s origins. An oral history comprising more than 75 interviews, it covers the early years of the Pyramid from the time of its founding through its rise, near demise and rebirth. The book includes previously unpublished photos, flyers and other ephemera, as well as excerpts from more than 50 press releases written between 1983 and 1986.”

MOMENT NYC programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in Partnership with the City Council.

Join us for a conversation about Naturally Occurring Music Communities and why they matter(ed) in New York City, with author and NYC music tour guide Jesse Rifkin, Douglas Sherman (Musical Host, The Loft), Julie “DJ Shakey” Covello (Warper Party, Shakey’s Record Fair), and Federico Ausbury (Pinc Louds). Followed by a live set by Pinc Louds.

There will be giveaways, stories and discussion about past and present underground music scenes. The role of these kinds of music communities in the birth of world-changing music genres such as Hip Hop, Punk, Disco, Jazz, Doo Wop, House and many others is undeniable. In their early forms, many of these small outsider music communities were actively despised and vilified by the mainstream press, radio, and society at large. How are these scenes developing in present-day New York, with globalized social media, and what, if any, realizations have come up in the post-pandemic world?

If you haven’t experienced the inspired joy of Pinc Louds’ infectious songs, come laugh, sing, dance and just be free to be yourself while finding out what you’ve been missing. If you’re already a convert come support this Drom takeover! Costumes and characters welcome!

Ilé Ìlù | House of Drums is a new monthly event celebrating Afro-descendent music & tradition in a setting that is organically connected to West African culture.
Each month features a different living folkloric tradition - from Rumba to Bomba, Palo to Vodoun - all expressions of Afro-descendent music/culture. Celebrate and share in traditional drumming, DJs, live music, visuals, food/drinks and a traditional West-African marketplace.

Headline Artist: Bodoma Garifuna @bodomagarifuna & his Cultural Group
The inspiring story of the Garifuna people traces back to a shipwreck of enslaved people off the coast of St. Vincent in the 1600s. Creating, transmitting, and preserving their own language, music & culture, the Garifuna have grown to a population of over 500,000 across Central America, Canada & the U.S.
Come experience the amazing music & dance of the Garifuna people performed by Bodoma and his wonderful group, have some Caribbean food, and try some Drums of Passion Punch!

SXSW artist pay is an absurdly low $250 per band, and hasn’t increased in over ten years. SXSW can afford Fair Pay: SXSW draws over 30,000 music attendees paying up to $1395 dollars for a badge, and $149 for a wristband, generating $164.8 million in 2022. Artists’ application fees alone generated $275,000 in 2022— over $200,000 more than SXSW paid out to artists! Penske Media (SXSW's primary owners) also own Rolling Stone, Billboard, Variety, Artforum, Women’s Wear Daily, and a slew of other publications. The billionaire Penske family are noted donors to far-right politicians and causes.

Blurring the lines between culture, tradition & performance, Ilé Ìlù | House of Drums is a place to become immersed in Afro-descendent culture live in NYC. Featuring world-class artists from the African music Diaspora, a Yoruba market, Ancestor & Ifa shrines, art+visuals, plus DJs + food/bar. The Òtúrá Rigbè Temple in Queens becomes a traditional village bringing together traditionalists and lovers of music & culture from across the vast NYC community and Afro-descendent culture - from West-African/Yoruba Ifa, to Ghana/Akan, Brazilian Candomble, Palo Congo, Division 21, Haitian Vodoun, Garifuna, Santeria, Trinidadian Sango, Rastafarian - all these expressions of African culture are ALIVE and vibrant in NYC. However, these different communities and their incredible musical traditions have been somewhat isolated. Come experience a slice of 1990s NYC nightlife.

This event will feature photographs taken by Alice Arnold during the early years of Giant Step; a DJ set by DJ Smash + guests; and a panel discussion with Paper Magazine founder, David Hershkovits, Giant Step co-founder and CEO, Maurice Bernstein, Head of Production at Kenzo Digital, Erica Lee

Alice Arnold is a documentary media maker and educator who creates, edits, designs and photographs projects that explore the urban environment and visual culture — from street art to advertising and from sidewalks to electric signs. Her films are in the collections of university libraries throughout the United States and have screened at MoMA and other festivals. She is a NYFA Photography Fellow, a Fulbright Fellow in film and an Adjunct Professor at the City University of New York. She recently published "Goldie Timeless" (Cafe Royal Books), a small photo book about a drum‘n'bass event in 1995.
